Yellowstone before the winter road closures: choose your route before your hotel
Last updated:

If you are considering Yellowstone in late October or early November, start with the roads rather than a list of sights. The National Park Service’s October 21 announcement confirms that most park roads close to regular vehicles on November 1. Saturday October 31 is the final scheduled driving day for those routes, subject to weather. [1]
That leaves two different trips to plan: a late-October visit using roads that are still accessible, or a November visit centered on the northern corridor.
Which entrances will close?
The West, South and East entrances are scheduled to close to regular traffic on November 1. The route between Gardiner and Cooke City/Silver Gate, through Mammoth Hot Springs and Lamar Valley, remains available year-round when conditions allow. Snowmobile and snowcoach operations are scheduled to begin on December 15. [1]
For a November visit, choose lodging around the route you can actually use. Do not assume a hotel close to a closed entrance gives you a convenient drive into the park.
Open road does not mean open restaurant
Services have their own closing dates. The NPS operating calendar lists October 25 as the last day for the Canyon Eatery and the Obsidian Dining Room at Old Faithful. The Geyser Grill and Old Faithful Visitor Education Center are listed through October 31. [3]
Mammoth’s Albright Visitor Center and campground are listed as year-round facilities. That is useful when comparing a northern itinerary with a final autumn drive, but a calendar listing is not a reservation or a guarantee of availability. [3]
Check food, lodging and visitor facilities separately. Make a meal plan before setting off, especially if your day depends on a particular stop.
Build a route with room to change
The park’s road page warns that conditions can change quickly and that short closures may not appear on the map. It also lists paving work just east of Tower Junction that can add up to 30 minutes through November. Check roads beyond Cooke City separately; the open park corridor does not guarantee an onward route to Cody or Red Lodge. [2]
Keep the first day modest. Pick one main area, identify a shorter alternative and leave time to return without rushing. Treat the published closing date as the latest planned opportunity, not a promise that every road will remain passable until then.

Before you commit
- Match your arrival date to the entrance and roads you intend to use. - Confirm the overnight stop, meal options and return route independently. - Recheck the official road map and weather before departure. - If conditions undermine the route, shorten or change the trip rather than trying to preserve every stop.

Uncertainty: Page last updated 13 October 2026. Dunraven Pass table still lists 12 October with an extension caveat; the newer 21 October release says through 31 October weather permitting. Draft avoids that conflict. Live status remains necessary.
