Edinburgh Airport: Tram or Airlink Bus for Your Hotel?
Last updated:

The easiest Edinburgh airport transfer often becomes clear when you put your hotel's front door on a map. A service that reaches the city quickly can still leave you with an awkward final walk. Start with the address, check when you will actually be ready to leave the terminal, and compare the whole journey.
For a hotel near Waverley, compare Airlink 100 with the tram to St Andrew Square. For Leith, investigate a tram stop near your accommodation. For a very late arrival, start with Airlink's overnight timetable. These are planning starting points; the exact address and service updates decide the final choice. [1] [3] [5]
Waverley and the eastern end of Princes Street
Airlink 100's city-centre terminus is Waverley Bridge. The tram's closest stop to Waverley railway station is St Andrew Square. Both are worth checking when your hotel is around the station or the eastern end of Princes Street. Airport bus information [1], St Andrew Square stop [2].
Compare walking directions from each arrival point to the hotel entrance. If your accommodation describes itself as being near the Royal Mile, use its street address rather than the neighbourhood label. Check for steps, gradients and the entrance you will actually use. Ask the hotel for its recommended luggage or step-free approach if the map is unclear.
Haymarket and the West End
A hotel close to Haymarket station gives the tram an obvious place on your shortlist: the stop is immediately outside the station. Plot the remaining walk before continuing farther into the centre. For a West End address, compare the tram's West End stop with the Airlink stopping pattern for your travel date. Haymarket stop information [4], tram route [3].
One current detail deserves attention. Lothian's update of 29 August 2026 confirmed that the full airport-to-Newhaven tram service had resumed, while retaining an Airlink city-bound stop change around Princes Street. Its notice directs passengers away from stop PF to alternatives at Shandwick Place or Hanover Street. Treat that as a reason to recheck your stop, rather than a promise about conditions on your arrival day. Lothian's Princes Street update [7].
Leith, Ocean Terminal and Newhaven
The tram continues beyond the city centre through Leith to Ocean Terminal and Newhaven. If your hotel is close to a stop on that line, staying on the tram can avoid a change in the centre. The useful comparison is the final walking route from the nearest stop, particularly if you have several bags. Official route map [3].
For an address farther from the tram, check other airport buses too. The airport lists Services 17 and 18 alongside Airlink, with routes serving different parts of Edinburgh. A city-centre transfer is not automatically the most direct option for every hotel. Airport bus routes [1].
Late arrivals: use your terminal-exit time
Airlink 100 operates around the clock. The regular tram timetable checked for this guide shows airport departures from 06:30 to 22:52. Those are departure times at the stop, so leave room for getting off the aircraft, any arrival formalities and collecting luggage. A flight scheduled just before the last tram needs a backup plan. Check the outward and return journeys independently. An early flight may need transport before the tram can get you to the airport. Work backwards from the arrival time your airline requires, adding the hotel-to-stop journey and a sensible disruption buffer.
For UK visitors planning a short break
If both flights use Edinburgh, compare a return product with two singles after you have chosen the route. Check that both journeys fit the same service and ticket conditions. An apparent saving is less useful if the return requires an extra connection or runs too late for your flight.
Look at the purchase channel as well as the fare name. Fares and ticket validity can depend on where you buy. Compare the current airport single and return options, including any online discounts, and confirm the total and validity before paying. City-zone products also need particular care: check that your chosen ticket covers the airport. Tram ticket options [8], official online shop [9].
For US visitors arriving in Edinburgh
On UK transport sites, a single means one way and a return means a round trip. If Edinburgh is the start of a wider itinerary and you will fly home from somewhere else, decide whether you need the second airport journey before buying it.
For tram contactless payment, tap at a platform validator before boarding and tap off with the same card or device at your destination. A phone and its underlying physical card count separately. The operator currently excludes American Express from platform validators, although its ticket machines accept it. Check your bank's overseas-use terms before travel. Tram contactless guidance [10].
Save the hotel's entrance and your chosen stop before flying. If you expect to be tired, favour the plan you can follow easily with your luggage. Check whether the hotel will hold bags if you arrive before check-in rather than building an ambitious first-day schedule around immediate room access.
The quick decision
Put the hotel entrance, arrival stop and return stop in one saved note. Add your backup for a missed last service. Before travelling, reopen the official timetable and Lothian service updates [11]. A useful transfer plan gets you all the way to the door and still works when the flight is a little late.
